A fascinating and unique anthropological study.

Synopsis

Whilst living amongst Peruvian Indians, anthropologist Jeremy Narby learned of their phenomenal knowledge of plants and biochemical interactions, gained under the influence of the hallucinogen ayahuasca. Despite his initial scepticism, Narby found himself engaged in an increasingly obsessive quest. He researched cutting-edge scholarship in subjects as diverse as molecular biology, shamanism, neurology and mythology, which led him inexorably to the conclusion that the Indians' claims were literally true: to a consciousness prepared with drugs, biochemical knowledge could indeed be transmitted, through DNA itself.

and will recommend it to my friends. Its bringing science and shamanism together in such a respectful, open mindet way. Im hoping that in 50 years this way of thinking will be normal in science. He is suggesting that currently scientists are positioning themselves very often on a superior position, for example assuming that shamans are just children living a phantasy, not taking them serious. assuming that life has been created by pure chance, instead of being open to not exclusively materialistic theories. (And not realizing that this bias of pure materialnes is not very scientific either.) One example, so that you know what im taking about: the author is stating that calling the parts of DNA which do not contain codes, but just long repetitions "Junk DNA" instead of "mystery DNA" is implementing the arrogance of some scientists. Just because we dont know what these parts of the DNA chains are good for, we obviously cant just say that its junk without being uncientific.I found the book easy and compelling to read. Very informative, hopefully both for hardcore scientists who think that the spiritual world is all phantasy, as for hardcore hippies, who think that science is useless in answering any of the big questions of life. (Im rather one of the later ones and looking forward to hear what my super science atheist friends will say about this book) Another reason I enjoyed reading it so much is that its written autobiographically by a person who I feel is a nice person. (without knowing him) Jeremy Narby is not writing a pure scientific report, but also telling us the story behind the science, how he felt, how he found things out. Instead of trying to create a pseudo objective text he is telling us a story which is hopefully helping in making us realize that all living beings are connected.

I had forgotten all about it. Read it.

Dieses Buch ist in Deutschland wenig bekannt, ist aber mittlerweile ein echter Klassiker. Der Schreibstil ist sehr eingängig und spannend für ein Fachbuch. Prädikat wertvoll.

Just read it. Changed my life and the way I look at reality. It starts out in one end of the universe and ends in a completely different end.

Schamanismus und Molekularbiologie sind näher zu einander, als man denkt. Ich freue mich, dass mehr Menschen die Brücken schlagen zwischen Wissenschaft und Spiritualität, und nicht als Gegensätze betrachten. Gut geschriebenes Buch, sehr empfehlenswert.

If you are at all interested in the subject matter, this is a must have book. Very interesting and well presented material.

First of all, I think the book is an entertaining read. It provides some interesting reports about indigenious mythology. Moreover, I can't agree more with his message that we should value the beliefs of others and protect the knowledge and territories of indigenous peoples. Narby reports of his experiences during anthropological fieldwork, and thoughts during writing the book. I found it interesting to follow his train of thought, leading to some revolutionary conclusions, if true. Yet, it doesn't go beyond entertainment.Narby tries to convince us that DNA and nature as a whole has consciousness and communicates with us, especially the shamans when they use hallucinogenic techniques.Narby's whole argument is based on an analogy which is itself supported by cherry-picked examples and results, which are then interpreted by biased Narby. He tends to overgeneralize from single examples (e.g. some biologists make circular arguments, so biology/theory of evolution as a whole discipline is flawed). Narby also seems to claim that biologists ignore alternative explanations. Yet, Narby himself doesn't give a prime example of charitable interpretation, or serious scientific work. (For some more detail read the review by lschoff@ibm.net). Narby doesn't live up to the methodological standard he has set himself. So, if you'd like to read some crazy stuff for entertainment during your holiday on the beach, go for it. If you're looking for a well-argued alternative to contemporary explanations of consciousness or shamanic knowledge, look elsewhere.
